Haynesville CORTEC Choke Field Trial

CC1E Gen II Adjustable Choke Field Trial

Trial Overview

A CORTEC Model CC1E Gen II stainless steel adjustable choke was placed into service during well startup earlier this summer for a field trial in the Haynesville Shale region. The completed actuated package was evaluated during a well start up condition in the early production life with severe sand volume and high velocity flow. A planned well shut in for detailed field inspection was conducted after 5 weeks of continuous service. This period represented the most abusive service conditions for the client’s regional operation and a common failure point for other OEM solutions they were previously using.

The completed package was evaluated under harsh well-startup operating conditions, including high sand volumes and high-velocity flow.

Choke Configuration

  • 2-1/16-inch, 10,000 psi API RTJ flanges
  • 2-inch nominal bore with 1-inch maximum orifice
  • Special two-piece body with Enhanced Flow Path Design
  • 1-inch fully lined SSTC, pressure-balanced external sleeve cage trim
  • TFE stem packing and O-ring bonnet seal
  • H₂S service per NACE MR0175, with no defined pH₂S limit
  • API 6A monogrammed: PSL 2, PR 2, TC PU and MC FF

Enhanced Flow Path Technology

The choke incorporates CORTEC’s Enhanced Flow Path Technology. Its internal geometry is optimized to minimize conventional choke wear patterns and provide extended service life in extreme service conditions. The CC1E Gen II also uses fewer components, simplifying inspection and repair. This service-friendly design helps shorten maintenance time and reduce production shut-in.

Initial Inspection Results

The equipment was inspected approximately five weeks after startup. Inspection of the choke’s internal flow surfaces found no visible signs of wear or wash.

On-Site Support and Training

A CORTEC Field Specialist worked alongside VanZandt’s Sales and Service Team during installation and the follow-up inspection. The teams also provided hands-on training for end-user personnel, helping them become familiar with the equipment and supporting a seamless transition into operation.

Performance Backed by Support

The trial’s early results demonstrated the performance of CORTEC’s Enhanced Flow Path Technology and the value of a service-friendly design engineered to reduce wear, simplify maintenance and minimize production shut-in time.

Combined with application engineering, responsive field service and ongoing support, CORTEC delivers more than equipment, we deliver flow-control solutions built around the demands of each operation.
